Janet Jackson – All For You (2001) (FLAC)

October 10, 2011 Music World: US-UK-EU, Tags:   Read More

Janet Jackson – All For You
Label: Virgin
Release Date: April 24, 2001
Language: English

All for You is the seventh studio album by American recording artist Janet Jackson, released in the United States on April 24, 2001 by Virgin Records. This album saw Jackson heavily incorporating pop and dance-pop music. It was her most Pop album yet. Unlike The Velvet Rope, which saw Jackson tackling darker issues like domestic violence and depression, All for You showcased a fluffier pop sound with lyrics talking mostly about her then-recent divorce. Despite strong language and excessive sexual content and themes, first pressings of the album did not contain a Parental Advisory warning on it, and a clean version was not offered. Subsequent pressings of the album did in fact have a Parental Advisory warning on it, along with a bonus track (the remix of “Son of a Gun”) and a clean version was also issued, which omitted the track “Would You Mind”. This exact situation happened with Jennifer Lopez’s album, J.Lo (2001), which was released around the same time. The album marked Jackson’s first album to be released with a Parental Advisory label on it; the second being follow-up Damita Jo (2004). Billboard magazine ranked All For You at number 141 on the magazine’s Top 200 Albums of the Decade.

Janet Jackson – The Velvet Rope
Label: Virgin
Release Date: October 7, 1997
Language: English

The Velvet Rope is the sixth studio album by American recording artist Janet Jackson, released October 7, 1997 by Virgin Records. Prior to its debut, Jackson had been at the center of a second high-profile bidding war over her recording contract. Following the release of her first greatest hits compilation Design of a Decade 1986/1996 in 1995, her contract with Virgin allotted her the option to leave the label. The Walt Disney Company attempted to sign her jointly with PolyGram, while Virgin sought to renegotiate her contract in order to retain her. Virgin was able to succeed in their negotiations, with Jackson receiving a historic $80 million dollar contract, making her the world’s highest paid musical act for the second time in her career.

The Velvet Rope debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, becoming her fourth consecutive album to top the chart. Although considered to be a commercial disappointment in comparison to the Janet record, the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) certified The Velvet Rope triple platinum, with worldwide sales exceeding ten million copies.

Janet Jackson – Janet Jackson’s Rhythm Nation 1814 (1989) (FLAC)

October 10, 2011 Music World: US-UK-EU, Tags:   Read More

Janet JacksonJanet Jackson’s Rhythm Nation 1814
Label: A&M
Release Date: September 19, 1989
Language: English

Janet Jackson’s Rhythm Nation 1814 is the fourth studio album by American recording artist Janet Jackson, released on September 19, 1989, by A&M Records. Despite demands from label executives for material similar to her previous album, Control (1986), she insisted on creating a concept album addressing social injustice. Collaborating with her producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, she co-wrote six of the album’s tracks. Its remaining songs were written by Jam and Lewis, with the exception of “Black Cat”, which is Jackson’s composition. She also co-produced the album, with label executive John McClain serving as executive producer. While writing lyrics for the album, Jackson, Jam and Lewis drew inspiration from news media, exploring subject matter such as racism, poverty and substance abuse. Although critics viewed the album’s theme as transparent—too generalized to adequately address any of these issues—she was hailed as a role model for youth because of her socially conscious lyrics.

Its seven commercial singles all peaked within the top five on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming the first and only album to achieve that feat. Jackson received nine Grammy Award nominations, winning Best Music Video, Long Form for “Rhythm Nation” in 1990. Music videos for the singles, which displayed a mix of Broadway-style choreography and militant imagery gained heavy rotation on MTV; Jackson was presented with the MTV Video Vanguard Award in 1990 for significant contribution to the art form. The supporting Rhythm Nation World Tour became the world’s most successful debut concert tour by a recording artist. It proved her to be a consummate performer rather than a studio-only phenomenon, as well as a fashion icon among young women.

Janet Jackson – Control (1986) (FLAC)

October 10, 2011 Music World: US-UK-EU, Tags:   Read More

Janet Jackson – Control
Label: A&M
Release Date: February 6, 1986
Language: English

Control is the third studio album by American recording artist Janet Jackson, released on February 6, 1986 by A&M Records. Her collaborations with songwriters and record producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis resulted in an unconventional sound: a fusion of rhythm and blues, funk, disco, rap vocals, and synthesized percussion that established Jackson, Jam and Lewis as the leading innovators of contemporary R&B. It enabled Jackson to transition into the popular music market, becoming one of the defining albums of the 1980s and contemporary music.

Containing autobiographical themes, a majority of the album’s lyrics came as the result of a series of changes in her life: a recent annulment from R&B singer James DeBarge, severing her business affairs from her father and manager Joseph and the rest of the Jackson family, hiring A&M executive John McClain as her new management, and her subsequent introduction to Jam and Lewis. The album has been praised by critics as both an artistic feat and as a personal testament of self-actualization.

Control is widely regarded as the breakthrough album of Jackson’s career. It became her first album to top the Billboard 200 and five of its commercial singles—”What Have You Done for Me Lately”, “Nasty”, “Control”, “When I Think of You”, and “Let’s Wait Awhile”—peaked within the top five of the Billboard Hot 100. Music videos created to promote the singles showcased her dancing ability and became a catalyst for MTV. The album went on to receive several accolades, including a nomination for the Grammy Award for Album of the Year and winning Producer of the Year, Non-Classical for Jam and Lewis in 1987. It is listed by the National Association of Recording Merchandisers and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as one of the 200 Definitive Albums of All Time. It has been certified fivefold platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and has sold over fourteen million copies worldwide.

Janet Jackson – Dream Street (1984) (FLAC)

October 10, 2011 Music World: US-UK-EU, Tags:   Read More

Janet Jackson – Dream Street
Label: A&M
Release Date: October 23, 1984
Language: English

Dream Street is the second studio album by American recording artist Janet Jackson, released on October 23, 1984.

More pop than her debut album’s “bubblegum soul” feel, the album wasn’t the runaway success that Janet’s father Joseph thought it would be, peaking at number one hundred forty-seven on the Billboard 200 in 1984. Today, this is Jackson’s rarest album and is much sought after by fans, though it is still available as an expensive Japanese import. The album did have one modest hit for Jackson, the top ten R&B single, “Don’t Stand Another Chance”, produced by brother Marlon. Also, the video for the song “Dream Street”, her first music video, was shot during the shooting of the TV show Fame.

With a two-out-of-five star rating, Ed Hogan with Allmusic commented saying “A listen to Janet Jackson’s Dream Street brings to mind remembrances of the then-teenaged singer’s appearances on American Bandstand. The first single, “Don’t Stand Another Chance,” was a family affair, produced by brother Marlon Jackson with vocal ad-libs by Michael Jackson. It was a Top Ten R&B hit during the summer of 1984. The extended 12″ mix rocks, showcasing outstanding synth work by John Barnes. Other standouts are the smeary Minneapolis funk cut “Pretty Boy” produced by Jesse Johnson, and both “Hold Back the Tears” and “If It Takes All Night” are prime examples of pleasing ’80s pop.”

Ken Tucker with The Philadelphia Inquirer gave it a “fair” rating, calling it “A small but pleasant surprise: The Jacksons’ youngest sister has come up with a more consistently entertaining album than her brothers’ Victory record. Most Dream Street songs have a glossy pop sheen, and Janet’s duet with English pop star Cliff Richard, “Two to the Power of Love,” is catchy, if totally forgettable. Most of the time Janet favors slick disco rhythms that are easy to listen to.

Tracklist:
01 Don’t Stand Another Chance
02 Two To The Power Of Love (with Cliff Richard)
03 Pretty Boy
04 Dream Street
05 Communication
06 Fast Girls

Janet JacksonJanet Jackson
Label: A&M
Release Date: September 21, 1982
Language: English

Janet Jackson is the self-titled debut album by American recording artist Janet Jackson, released on September 21, 1982 by A&M Records. Jackson’s career as a recording artist was established by her father and manager Joseph Jackson, who arranged her recording contract with A&M Records.

The album’s musical content contains bubblegum pop mixed with elements of disco and funk. Songwriters Angela Winbush and René Moore contributed to much of the album’s lyrics. Moore and Winbush share production credits with and Foster Sylvers, Jerry Weaver, and Bobby Watson. Janet Jackson debuted at number six on the Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums and its single “Young Love” peaked at number six on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.

Prior to her recording contract with A&M Records, Janet Jackson was best known as a television actress; most notable for her role as Penny on the series Good Times and Charlene on Diff’rent Strokes. Janet didn’t want any of her family members to participate in the making of the album. She wanted it to be her own project, judged by its own merits. She sang part of the song “The Magic is Working” on the sitcom Diff’rent Strokes to promote it. The cover photo of Janet was taken in the swimming pool of the Jackson family’s home.
